Member of CGE, William A. Mitchell, faculty from Baylor University published Baylor in Northern Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom: Journeys to Dohuk for Higher Education, Democracy, and Voices for Survivors. CGE followed Dr. Mitchell throughout his journeys and accompanied him on his historic 2003 trip to Dohuk to visit universities.
Bill Mitchell's book is about helping “neighbors” in a war-torn country. During the first five years of Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2007), Baylor educators and friends made five journeys into Northern Iraq to help prepare for education in the context of a free society, with civil rights and rule of law. Two journeys included oral history interviews and humanitarian assistance for the survivors of Saddam’s cruelty. Mitchell’s interviews and diaries of the internal refugees’ capture not only the suffering but also human and spiritual resilience and courage under deplorable times. Today, the turmoil and suffering of the innocent continues.
